The future of carbon capture and storage (CCS) now hangs in a rather delicate balance. With the new US administration in place - a regime that, let’s say, views net zero goals with the enthusiasm of a cat facing a bath - there is an undeniable shift in momentum. While the Inflation Reduction Act remains intact for now, bolstered by the fact that undoing it would require a Herculean act of Congress, the prevailing sentiment in Washington has turned from cautious optimism to something closer to indifference, if not outright hostility. This contrasts starkly with the previous administration’s push to make CCS a cornerstone of industrial decarbonisation, using generous tax incentives to nudge the market forward.
