Carbon Management Society Responds to Repeal of EPA Endangerment Finding
Melbourne, Australia – February 14, 2026
The Carbon Management Society (CMS) expresses deep concern regarding the repeal of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2009 Endangerment Finding - the scientific determination that greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare and the legal foundation for regulating emissions under the Clean Air Act.
This decision represents a significant departure from science-based policy at a time when climate risks are accelerating. The Endangerment Finding was grounded in extensive scientific evidence, repeatedly upheld in federal courts, and has underpinned more than a decade of emissions standards protecting both public health and economic stability.
Rescinding this finding does not alter the physical reality of climate change.
Rising temperatures, intensifying extreme weather, and mounting economic losses continue to demonstrate the tangible risks posed by greenhouse gas emissions. Weakening regulatory frameworks at this juncture increases long-term costs - environmental, social and financial.
CMS calls on policymakers to reaffirm their commitment to evidence-based governance and to strengthen - not dismantle - the mechanisms that drive responsible carbon management. Durable economic competitiveness and environmental stewardship are not opposing objectives; they are mutually reinforcing pillars of long-term prosperity.
The Carbon Management Society remains committed to advancing rigorous, science-based dialogue across the full carbon management ecosystem and to supporting policies grounded in evidence, integrity and long-term thinking.
